Joan was born on September 20, 1934 to Taft and Marguerite (Long) McGee in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The family moved to Hereford, Texas in 1945. She was a Hereford High School graduate in 1952 who went on to get a B.A. degree in Business from Texas Tech in 1956. She later went on to receive her Education degree. While at Texas Tech, she met the love of her life Dave Hopper, and the two were married in Lubbock on Christmas day, 1957. They lived briefly in El Paso during 1958 and returned to Hereford in 1959 to make their home.

Mrs. Hopper taught elementary school, mainly the 1st grade for 40 years for the Hereford Independent School District. She continued as a substitute teacher for another 10 years after her retirement. She was a devoted mother who truly loved her work, family, and community. Her Daughter Robin and her grandsons Jarrett and Payton were the lights of her life. She was an avid Tech supporter and loved watching the Red Raiders with Dave. She had many close friends whom she loved very much. They often joined her for coffee, walks, bridge, sports games, trips, and dinners out.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved husband, Dave. Her nephew Larry Lomas of Hereford, Texas also precedes her.

She is survived by her two sisters: Joyce (McGee) Lomas of Hereford, Texas, and Judy (McGee) Renfro and husband Bob of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her daughter Robin O’Neal and husband Sean of Spicewood, Texas and her two grandsons Payton O’Neal of Waco, Texas, and Jarrett O’Neal of New York City, New York and also survive her. Joan also leaves behind her nephews Rob Lomas and wife Lesley of Hereford, Texas, and Quenton Renfro of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as her niece Paige Simmons of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Surviving her as well are several grandnieces and nephews, all of whom love and will miss her greatly.

The family would like to add a special thanks to Joyce Lomas and King’s Manor who helped Joan in Hereford, as well as the staff at the Harbor of Lakeway and Valerian Hospice who helped Joan and Robin in the past year.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joan’s name to the Amarillo Children’s Home, or to the charity of your choice.
